The unopened envelope.

The envelope lay under Marcus’s fruit bowl. His sister had mailed him the details of a supper at the church where his recovery group met. He knew the building. He knew which door stuck when it rained. What he did not know was how to walk through it after disappearing for six weeks.

He had drunk again. Then he had stopped answering people who might ask how he was. Every unanswered message made the next one harder. He kept deciding he would call when he had something better to report.

His sister had written the date by hand. Underneath it she had added, “You can sit with me.” Marcus read that sentence three times. There was no request for an explanation in the envelope, though he had supplied plenty in his head.

He remembered the Deepen conversation about an invitation he could not earn. He had begun treating grace like a door that would open once he arrived with enough good days. He wanted to believe Jesus could meet him before he had a convincing account of himself.

He called his sister from the driveway. “I’ve been drinking,” he said. The sentence came out flat and small. She asked if he was safe where he was, then listened while he told her what he had been avoiding. They made a plan to go to the supper together.

At the table, somebody asked whether he wanted potatoes. It was such an ordinary question that his eyes filled. No one needed a speech from him before passing the bowl.

Later he spoke privately with a man from the group. Marcus wanted to promise it would never happen again. Instead he said, “I don’t want to keep doing this alone.” They agreed to talk the next day about getting support back in place.

Nothing was repaired simply because he ate dinner. There were difficult conversations ahead and help he still needed to accept. On his way out, his sister handed him a container of leftovers. He took it home, moved the envelope from under the bowl, and put the next meeting on his calendar.
