The chair at the door.

Daniel had been sober long enough to know where everything belonged. Coffee in the cupboard. Spare readings under the table. Chairs in a circle, with a clear path to the door. On Thursday evenings, setting up the recovery meeting gave his hands something useful to do.

Anne arrived twenty minutes early. She stood on the mat with rain dripping from her sleeves and asked whether this was the right room. Then, before he could answer, she asked another question. “Do I have to talk?”

He started explaining the format. The readings, the sharing, how long people usually spoke. Halfway through, he saw her hand tighten around the door handle. He remembered standing in that exact spot three years earlier, hoping someone would make it possible to stay.

“You can just listen,” he said. “Would you like a coffee?” He put a chair near the door and sat beside it. She chose that chair. He let the silence last.

Anne said she had driven past the building twice the week before. At home she had practiced saying she needed help, but in the car the words sounded too large. Daniel told her that his first meeting had started in a parking lot, with someone waiting while he decided whether to get out.

When the reading mentioned God, she looked down. During the break she asked Daniel if she had to have that figured out, too. “I’m a Christian,” he said, “and I still bring questions. You’re welcome here with yours.” He did not make her uncertainty into a discussion she had to win.

At the end, Anne said her first name to the group. That was all she wanted to say. Someone gave her a meeting list; another person offered a phone number. Daniel asked if she wanted help finding the next meeting. This time, she said yes.

Later, stacking the chairs, he thought about the episode’s challenge to notice what religious appearances can hide. He had nearly given a frightened person a set of instructions when she needed a welcome. He left one chair by the door while he finished cleaning. Its place made sense to him now.
