The towels on the table.

Ben had a speech ready when his wife came home. Four months sober, a new routine, a list of things he understood now. He wanted to tell Elise that their marriage mattered more than anything. On the table between them sat the laundry he had promised to fold.

Elise put down her bag. She was tired from work. Ben asked if they could talk. She looked at the towels and said, “Could you finish that first?” He heard dismissal. She had asked for folded towels.

He carried the basket to the bedroom and began rehearsing the argument he would not say aloud. He was trying. She never noticed. There should be some room for how hard this was. By the third towel, he recognized how familiar the argument sounded.

The next day he told a trusted friend from his recovery group. His friend asked what Elise had actually requested. Ben repeated the sentence without adding his interpretation. It sounded smaller, and more reasonable, the second time.

The connection between marriage and covenant love stayed with him. He had been imagining a dramatic renewal. He began wondering what it would mean to keep a small promise when no renewal had been promised in return.

On Saturday he finished the laundry, made his own plans for getting to the meeting, and asked Elise whether there was a time she wanted to talk. “Not this morning,” she said. He said okay. He did not leave his disappointment lying around for her to clean up.

That evening they ate at opposite ends of the table. Elise asked about the meeting. Ben answered the question she had asked, then listened when she spoke about work. There was no announcement that things were better.

Before bed, she took a towel from the cupboard. Ben heard the door close softly. He wanted to make something of that sound. Instead he checked the calendar for the task he had agreed to do tomorrow. Their future was not his to declare. Tomorrow’s promise was his to keep.
