After the applause.

Owen had prepared his recovery story in the truck. The funny opening. The hard part. The sentence about God that usually made people nod. At the anniversary gathering, he kept checking the front table to see who would speak next.

The organizer chose another man. Owen applauded with everyone else, then folded his notes until the paper was a tight little square. He told himself he was happy just to be there. His foot kept tapping beneath the chair.

After the cake, a woman named Ruth asked whether he could dry some cups. He almost said he had somewhere to be. There was nothing waiting for him at home except laundry and the same disappointment he would carry there.

In the kitchen he dried each cup harder than it needed. Ruth washed. Neither spoke for a while. Then a younger man came in with a stack of plates and asked where things went. Owen knew the cupboards. He showed him.

The younger man said this was his first sober gathering outside a meeting. He had been afraid there would be some unspoken way to behave. Owen looked down at his damp towel. “Apparently we wash dishes,” he said. The man laughed and stayed.

They talked about coffee, night shifts, and the awkward hours after work. Owen forgot the opening he had practiced. He told the younger man about an evening when he had called three people before someone answered, and how glad he was that he had kept calling.

On the drive home, he remembered the Deepen teaching about service and greatness. He had wanted a microphone because he had something useful to offer. He had also wanted people to see him offering it. Both things could be true.

He left the folded speech in the cup holder. When Ruth asked the following month if he could arrive early, he said yes. This time he brought a clean towel from home.
